Pertinent Clinical Trials
Several exciting, new clinical trials are recruiting COPD patients for cutting edge research into the degenerative disease (all information provided by clinicaltrials.org):
Genetic Mechanism of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to determine whether genetic factors contribute to an individuals risk of developing obstructive lung disease from smoking cigarettes.
Design: Screening, Cross-Sectional, Defined Population, Retrospective Study
Eligibility: Either gender, 40 years of age or older, cigarette smoking of at least 30-packs a year, obstructive spirometry, a participating first degree relative with smoking history
A study using an investigational new medicine looking at its effects on pulmonary function and respiratory symptoms in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary
Purpose: Treatment with an investigational new medicine to determine if it improves lung function and decreases the symptoms of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
Design: Treatment
Eligibility: Either gender, at least 18 years of age, currently stable COPD with no change in COPD treatment in the prior 4 weeks
OPUS Study: Effect of Roflumilast on exacerbation rate in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to determine whether roflumilast is effective in the treatment of exacerbations in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Design: Treatment, Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo Control, Parallel Assignment, Safety/Efficacy Study
Eligibility: Either gender, at least 40 years of age, FEV1/FVC ratio (post-bronchodilator) <= 70%, FEV1 (post-bronchodilator) <= 50% of predicted, current smoker or ex-smoker, clinically stable COPD indicated by no exacerbation and no change in COPD treatment of within 4 weeks prior to baseline, availability of chest x-ray dated a maximum of 6 months prior to study baseline or a willingness to have a chest x-ray performed at baseline.
